Condenser coils were packed with lint and dust, garage ambient read 101F, and the start relay and overload had failed under the load. Part was a relay and overload kit at $54. Labour was $175, including pulling and cleaning the condenser. Subtotal $229, sales tax at 9.1 percent added $20.84, total $249.84 with the $89 credited into it.
The freezer held minus 2F within nine hours and none of the food was lost. Heat and dust kill the cheap part first, and a relay that fails in a 101F garage would have lasted years in a basement. Clean the coils twice a year and give the box four inches of clearance. He sent us across the street for a dryer taking three cycles per load.
